Today, modern Wi-Fi networks are an integral part of the daily operations of businesses and educational institutions. They bring flexibility, mobility and convenience, but they also open the door to new security risks that need to be taken seriously.
In the company FixIS we often find that Wi-Fi infrastructure security is underestimated, especially in schools where network traffic is intense and the user environment is diverse. However, we also see the same vulnerabilities in the corporate sector.
The most common security weaknesses in Wi-Fi networks:
- Weak or default passwords – The most common mistake is to use simple, easy-to-guess passwords or to leave the manufacturer’s default credentials.
- Failure to separate guest and employee/pupil networks – A public Wi-Fi network without properly configured segmentation and VLANs poses a major risk to sensitive internal systems.
- Outdated protocols and equipment – Wi-Fi networks based on old standards such as WEP or WPA are now virtually an open door for attackers.
- Lack of monitoring and incident logging – Most organisations do not monitor Wi-Fi network traffic at all, losing control of who is using the network and how.
How to secure Wi-Fi networks in your school or business?
- Use strong passwords and modern encryption standards – We recommend WPA3 or at least WPA2-Enterprise with centralized access management via RADIUS.
- Segment the network into separate VLANs for guests, administration and internal systems – Prevent visitors from directly accessing sensitive internal data.
- Regularly update firmware and network devices – Ensure network elements are protected against the latest vulnerabilities.
- Introduce monitoring and logging of Wi-Fi network access – In the event of an incident, you’ll be able to see who used the network, when and how.
- Use secure VPN tunnels to access internal systems from the outside – Set up multi-factor protection for critical systems from within the Wi-Fi network.
- Leverage two-factor authentication and integration with Office 365 or other SaaS systems – One of the most secure solutions for businesses is to connect your Wi-Fi network to existing SaaS platforms like Microsoft Office 365, Azure AD or Google Workspacewhere authentication is based on corporate accounts with active two-factor authentication.
This approach eliminates the need to share passwords, ensures adherence to corporate standards for password length and periodic password exchange, and enables central access control. This integration significantly increases the level of security of the corporate Wi-Fi infrastructure and minimises the risks associated with unauthorised access.
Wi-Fi isn’t just about connectivity, it’s a critical part of a business or school infrastructure
A modern Wi-Fi network must be designed not only for coverage and performance, but most importantly for security and access management. In the case of schools and public spaces, it is also important to think about protecting children and young people from risky content and unauthorised access.
V FixIS we help schools and businesses not only with network security, but also with network design, segmentation, integration with Office 365 and setting up modern access rules.
